Plot: Hmm…where to begin. Sidekickin’ Hero left me with a weird taste in my mouth. Not bad or good…just weird. It has a GREAT premise – let me get to that first. The premise is told through the point of view of a sidekick of some great superhero named Major Hero – problem is that he hates his job and the hero has amnesia. The first story doesn’t explain this amnesia so you just have to go with it. The second story DOES explain the amnesia, but offers little less than that. Story 2 is told one year before Story 1 is, so it plays out like “Memento” (a movie that is actually hinted at by the sidekick).
Art: The art is pretty much the same in both stories, story 2 feels like more conventional superhero art than story 1 does, but they are both done well. I personally liked story 1’s art a little better because it helped compliment the comedic story that was being told.
Writing: I can’t complain much about the writing either. It was solid from both writers. The only thing I’m complaining about here is that I feel empty from reading a one-shot that shouldn’t have been a one-shot. In the end, I was left wanting to know more and feeling like the book came across with an idea that just didn’t live up to it’s potential. I just had the feeling like I had read something that didn’t offer me anything other than a chuckle and disappointment.
Overall: 6 out of 10
