COVERING COMICS: Criticism, Reportage, and Gossip | Room 219
The digital age has allowed a deeper understanding of comics criticism and reporting than has ever been possible before.  Tom Spurgeon of the Comics Reporter moderates this discussion featuring some of the leading lights on the comics journalism scene, including Heidi MacDonald of The Beat, Tim Hodler of the Comics Comics magazine and blog, Matt Brady of Newsarama, and Johanna Draper-Carlson of Comics Worth Reading. From industry reporting and journalism to criticism and good ole gossip, this is sure to be a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the comics news!

HERO INITIATIVE SIGNING: Ron Wilson | Booth 100

Legendary Marvel penciller Ron Wilson (MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE, THING) will be signing from 12-3pm at the Hero Initiative booth. SCAD WORKSHOP SERIES | Superhero Anatomy Basics
Room 201

Tom Lyle, former Marvel and DC artist on such titles as Spider-Man and Batman, has been sharing his insight and knowledge as a Professor of Sequential Art at the Savannah College of Art and Design for the last three years. His workshop will cover the basics of Superhero Anatomy and the difference between “normal” and “superhero” figures. Learn how to draw for the biggest impact and power!

1.30 PM

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY DISCUSSION | Room 207
The Comics Reporter's Tom Spurgeon moderates what's sure to be one of the most fascinating conversations of the weekend, in this roundtable discussion featuring artist and Image publisher Erik Larsen, DC Executive Editor Dan Didio, artist and DRAW! MAGAZINE editor-in-chief Mike Manley, writer/artist Jimmy Palmiotti (COUNTDOWN, JONAH HEX), and writer and Boom! Studios Editor-In-Chief Mark Waid.

THE NICHOLAS GUREWITCH FELLOWSHIP | Room 208

Nicholas Gurewitch is the author of the wildly--insanely, ridiculously, preposterously--popular Perry Bible Fellowship online strip, which has nothing to do with the more famous Bible, before you ask. His recent collection The Trial of Colonel Sweeto broke all sorts of records, and was even on the Amazon Top 10 list for a little while, which is nutty for a comic book, no matter who you are. Having been interviewed by everyone from Newsarama to The Guardian and Fox News, Nicholas foolishly consented to be interviewed live by HeroesCon's Creative Director, Dustin Harbin, while you watch. Will his career survive? Most likely, yes.

2.30 PM

SCAD WORKSHOP SERIES | Mini-Comics
Room 201

David Allan Duncan, Professor at SCAD and newly appointed Chair of the Sequential Art Department, will conduct a workshop on Mini-Comics. Mini-comics can be unique one-of-a-kind objects, serialized longer stories, portfolios that showcase a particular skillset or body of work, or whatever specific need or purpose the creator chooses. They are often considered a stepping stone into the industry. This workshop will focus on the medium of mini-comics, their production and distribution.

3.00 PM

CAGE MATCH: Comics Comics Vs Comics Comics! | Room 208
A live critique session with the editors of Comics Comics. Timothy Hodler, Dan Nadel and Frank Santoro will conduct a no-holds-barred argument about a comic book or graphic novel of their choice. Audience participation is encouraged. Chairs might be thrown.

HERO INITIATIVE SIGNING: Matt Wagner | Booth 100
GRENDEL and MAGE creator Matt Wagner will be signing from 3-4pm at the Hero Initiative booth. The Hero Initiative is a not-for-profit organization that creates a financial safety net for yesterdays' creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. Please consider donating to this worthy cause!

3.30 PM

SPOTLIGHT ON RICHARD THOMPSON | Room 219
The first great newspaper comic strip of the 21st Century has arrived, and like Mutts and Calvin & Hobbes before it, Richard Thompson's Cul De Sac has spent its first several months in syndication operating just underneath the pop-cult radar, adding papers steadily, readying to break out into the Next Big Thing. Join Tom Spurgeon for a wide-ranging discussion about art, caricature, and the Otterloop Family with one of the best cartoonists in North America, bar none. It's the panel you'll get to brag about attending in the years ahead, after Thompson conquers the comics world.

4.00 PM

Debuting at this year’s HeroesCon, AdHouse Books’ SUPERIOR SHOWCASE #3 features the work of STREET ANGEL co-creator Jim Rugg, DON’T DISTURB MY WAKING DREAM awesomistress Laura Park, and HeroesCon’s own Dustin Harbin, all under the forgiving gaze of a cover by Roger Langridge! THE CREATIVE HOUSEHOLD | Room 208
There are a surprising number of couples in comics where both partners are working in the industry in some capacity; and most of them are attending this year’s HeroesCon!  Tom Spurgeon of the Comics Reporter sits down with three of them:  Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick, Stuart and Kathryn Immonen, and Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer.  This discussion of the ins and outs of where work and love meets is bound to be one of the most entertaining panels you’ll go to at ANY convention this year, so be sure and add it to your schedule!

This year’s HeroesCon Art Auction will take place for the first time in uptown Charlotte’s coolest club, The Alley Cat!
Located at 314 N. College St., just five blocks up from the Convention Center, The Alley Cat is not only big enough to hold our ever-expanding Art Auction, but with the Penguin restaurant right inside, you can show up early, have some of the South’s best burgers and fried pickles, and then have a great time bidding on original art and enjoying their full bar!

And best of all, the Art Auction is a great chance to hobnob with pros in a relaxed, fun environment--it’s just one of the things that have made us so popular with fans and pros alike! Event scheduled to begin close to 6:30--seriously!

The number of donations we get is so immense, this year we’re going to try and pick a representative group of pieces to take to the “live” Art Auction. But if you can’t make it to the Alley Cat, you can bid on the other pieces in our new Silent Auction all weekend long! Check at the Info Booth or at the Art Auction stage at the back of the hall for more details!
