Jonah Hex #62 / DC Comics
Jonah Hex has come to mean quality in the world of comics. Over the course of its five year plus run it has come to epitomise the top level of creativity on both the writing and artistic front. The oft in the background Justin Grey and the oft vocal Jimmy Palmiotti are joined on this issue in a huge treat for fans by 100 Bullets legend Eduardo Risso.
Risso, who has stayed shy of a run on a title since the Vertigo stalwart finished last year joins the title as artist for the first time in between two Jordi Bernet issues who will return in January on #63. His unique style looks fantastic giving us a dark but detailed portrayal of what the trail to Carson City, Nevada would have looked like over a century before. In this one and done tale which follows Jonah who is hired to accompany four other men to bring a mysterious ';package' to Carson City. The contents of the package are the cause of unrest among four of the protectors who also take exception to Hex joining them as they believe that he is there only to undermine them. As they contents of the package remain a mystery to those carrying it, the rising tension between the groups has Jonah sleeping with one eye open.
Along with the likes of Darwyn Cook, series semi regular Bernet, former Captain America artist Luke Ross and some of Dick Giordano's last published work this title has always been a beautiful book to look at. Grey and Palmiotti have an affinity for the character that is hard to surpass with any other creative team on any other book. If you have $2.99 to spare this week why not look the way of this title and get yourself a one shot story to whet your appetite for the ugliest sonovabitch in the west.
