Summit City Comic Con Coverage
by Scott DM Simmons

Summit City Comic Con exceeded every expectation! Foot traffic and attendance were awesome, and the way the show was set up with only a few dealers, that meant it was more of a show about the artists (70 plus of us). Lots of families with happy kids came through the show (as kids under 12 got in free). My friend Mark LeMieux and I did very well at our respective tables which were set up next to each other, and in the show's 1 day, I ended up making more than my 3 days of C2E2. Plus, my only expenses on the trip were gas and food. I stayed with Mark and his family who live nearby, and even found free on-street parking during the show... luckily right next to the loading area. The show's tables were free for the artists, and they gave us drinks and chips and checked up on us every now and then to see if we needed anything. Everyone that helped run the show was nice, especially promoter Zack Kruse. If artists were interested, Zack even helped direct possible pre-orders of artwork through his website, which two people had contacted me about. The convention center was big enough without being ridiculously huge with such easy access back hallways and a nice loading area, with large rolling carts available to us to load our items, making set up and tear down a breeze. The show even supplied the artists with official Summit City bordered sketch cards...which I assume helped me seal the deal on people who were considering my sketch cards, since the momento value was even higher). I cannot say enough good things about this show.

I saw fellow sketch card and comic artist Katie Cook (Star Wars, Fraggle Rock) there, and was happy to ask her to do two "mini-paintings" of my characters from Knights of P.O.W.E.R. for only $5 each. A tad smaller than art on a sketch card, these are ink and watercolor drawings on a 3x4 rounded edge card. I got one of Sapphire Red and one of Steelglove. Saw some familiar faces there, including a few of the Comic Related extended artist family, and the artists who I talked to were saying they did well. The dealers even did great since they had little competition. Myself, I picked up a Watchmen Silk Spectre (Laurie) action figure for only $10, to go with my only other Watchmen figure, Nite Owl. And Mark did a sketch card of my character Sapphire Red for me!

Anyways, what a fun show! I hope everyone there had as good a time as I did. I will definitely have this show on my schedule for next year again. They have already set the date for May 21, 2011. Visit them at www.summitcitycomiccon.com.
