HeroesCon Day Three:
A Comedy of Errors or Chuck Moore Controls the Universe

By John Wilson

Remember what I said about our luck holding out in my last report? Well it held out...like a wet paper towel holding a bowling ball! Apparently, fate was not amused at our own Chuck Moore tempting it so heavily by proclaiming "Nothing can go wrong." repeatedly. That evening we experienced minor but annoying audio equipment issues and that morning we woke up to no water and found out that four city blocks around us were without power and water. Without any other prospects, we cleaned up as best we could and headed out to the con, which we were told was also without power (which was thankfully misinformation) and the water and power returned an hour or so later, so we were able to run back to the room before checkout for a proper shower. So all in all, we got off lucky...although this is a public reminder to Chuck to use those powers for good rather than evil.

The day at the con couldn't have gone better. We did tons of interviews (which you will hear right here on the mighty CR). I personally was honored to be asked to interview the editor of Titan Books, who showed me a trio of books that they will be debuting at SDCC this year. One is about prolific movie poster artist Drew Struzan. Struzan has created many of the most famous movie posters and images of the last several decades. The artist opened his archives to the book's creators and the result is absolutely spectacular. A second book featuring the previously rarely seen early work of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby was also discussed, with the revelation that Simon himself is assisting with the book. The third book is a retrospective of Beetle Bailey and his creator, Mort Walker. I had the opportunity to flip through each of the proofs and they all look spectacular. On the other side of the spectrum, I was able to interview a young creator right at the beginning of his career and a college educated creator who learned from Walt Simonson. These are but a fraction of the interviews that Chuck and Darren took care of while I manned the control center. It was a great day all around.

And best of all, the ride home was virtually uneventful...so much so that I fell asleep during the last leg of the trip(much to the chagrin of my travelling companions. The curse is broken and the trip that should not be named can be spoken of again. Heroes Con...we'll see you next year.
