The Way to Heroes Isn't Hard to Find: A Heroes Con Report
By John Wilson
After an uneventful road trip made in exactly the correct amount of time, the Comic Related crew (being yours truly, the incomparable Darren Mueller, and the incorruptible Chuck Moore) descended on to the massive floor of the Heroes Convention and were greeted by, well, a number of empty tables. But they would not stay empty for long as creators began trickling in and setting up their wares in anticipation of Day One.
And an excellent Day One it was. The Indy comics' faithful are out in force here at Heroes and the fans were several deep themselves. What has always impressed me about Heroes is how eclectic it is and the blurred line between the Mainstream and Small Press and the large and the small publishers. Probably the largest publisher here this weekend is BOOM! and they are set up right next to a number of first time publishers and dealers. There is not that invisible dividing line between that exists at so many shows and for the most part the unspoken air of superiority that some mainstream creators show it virtually non-existent here.
We have old friends a plenty here like Adam Withers and Comfort Love, creators of the fabulous Uniques. Chris Flick, creator of the hilarious Capes and Babes, the great couple behind Think Weasel and the best comic book musicians ever, Kirby Krackle. On wondering through I have found every level of style and dedication to the artwork, every genre of interest from totally kid-friendly and fun to decidedly adult. There is truly something here for everyone.
And that's a little touch of Day One. Day Two and much more fun are a ';coming. Stay tuned.
