HeroesCon - Day 1, The Early Report - "Behind the Scenes Setting Up"

Comic Related has returned to HeroesCon and the 2010 show is off to a great start. We drove down Thursday afternoon, managed to not get lost this year, quickly got our room squared away and headed for the show floor. As is traditional for HeroesCon, we were barely in the door before we were greeted by the show organizers (seriously, within moments). We were ushered into a comfortable private room to sort out all the credentials and registration confirmation and organizers still had a smile on their faces. HeroesCon actually has a dedicated rep for artists, creators and press that took care of our every need. If you want to see how to run a solid show, it's clear organizers of other events can learn a lot from Dustin and Sheldon.

As we settled into our booth (which was adjusted, location-wise a couple times to give us a better spot), we had electrictity, our table and chairs within about 15 minutes. This is simply unheard of at many events and it bears explaining that we were not getting any kind of special treatment as Dustin was getting hit with "help me" issues pretty frequently and deftly juggled the resolutions. I know this is a bit off topic for the average comic fan, but it deserves to be celebrated as it's clear that an effort is being put forth by the organizers. There is a desire to support creators and their work that bleeds through into the attitude of the entire show. THe spirit present here can be surprising to creators.

As I write this, the show floor has been open just a few hours and there is a nice crowd for a Friday morning con kickoff. I can't yet get a read if it is a "buying" crowd but the attention to small press vs. big name creative stars feels pretty balanced. Upon first glance, the retailer areas are very comic focused (which is a goal for this show) and the level of quality, across the board, for small and indie press is quite high. I see quite a bit of stuff I want to sample before I'm done. The mood so far for me... EXCITED!
