Legion of Super-Heroes #1

Chuck Moore on the issue!

Long live the Legion and if this first issue is any indication, returning Paul Levitz to writing the series puts it in very good hands. When I was a serious comic collector, Legion of Super-Heroes stories were my one passion and I've scoured many a longbox over the years hunting the early appearances uniting an almost unbroken run of the various incarnations of the title (before it was easy to do over ebay or via Mile High Comics).

I remember well the last time Levitz helmed the book back in the 80's and welcome his return to these stories as it ushers back my Legion. Much like any Doctor Who fan can be judged by what Doctor is "their Doctor" (defining what era they fell in love with the series) so too can a Legion fan be defined by which era he or she loves best.

Levitz brought us the first real "adult Legion" and, arguably, the best Legion story ever told in The Great Darkness Saga. His return here can only spell good things for a franchise that has been rebooted again and again over the years and I hope his run this time is at least as long as his last association with the title (as far back as 1977 and then enjoying the true Levitz years from 1982 to 1989).

The story (though I don't plan to give a lot away here) is dramatic, planet shattering by the end and pulls in some fan favorites characters from the series. My highest compliment here is that it has that classic Legion feel. Over the years I sometimes lamented the loss of the United Planets style cities and feel in those 80's Legion stories. Here the classics are back right down to the original rocketship clubhouse from the very earliest days of the team. This story is loaded with easter eggs and hat nods for longtime Legion fans, but presents a clear, concise story that builds on elements from Darkest Night, Legion of Two Worlds and recent Legion series in a way that evolves our heroes rather than presenting you with a new take as has happened so often before.

The art... jaw droppingly good. Welcome Yildiray Cinar and Wayne Faucher to the Legion creative family. You're going to do just fine here as the look is exactly what I would want from a Legion series.

Whether you're a first time Legion reader or a longtime fan, this is comic gold as far as I'm concerned and I invite you to check out the newest fashion statement in cool ring wear. The Lanterns aren't the only ones that can pull out the vintage bling to get a comic reader excited. I'll take my ring with an "L" on it please!
