Brightest Day #1
Chuck Moore on the issue
This is a tough one to cover as a hot shot as almost every other panel in this issue would be a spoiler if I shared it here. With that in mind, I'm going to discuss the issue in broader terms for a few moments.
As you must know by now, twelve notable individuals who were dead have been brought back to the DCU pulling from the villain, hero and even b-lister rank. What we have is a good old fashioned epic mystery evolving surrounding why these people were chosen and what forces are at play impacting the world of our heroes.
I will openly admit that going for this as our Hot Shot this week may seem like an obvious and somewhat predictable pick, but this issue is so packed with revealing moments and character evolution that I simply could not ignore it for the Hot Shot honors. It's not just a kickoff for the next "big event" but rather a story filled with human emotion, reunions, conflict and intrigue. Here Johns and Tomasi are taking concepts that are core to these characters (for example... Aquaman's interactions with marine life, Deadman being dead, who and how Firestorm works, etc.) and turning things upside down, reimagining the potential of each character. That said, they're doing it in a way that feels organic and natural to what's taking place in the story. In other words, no Red/Blue Superman styled stories popping up here.
The art is pretty flawless and only adds to the quality of this read.
Overall, there are so many things developing here that I feel like I need a road map. The issue was a tour de force of the DCU that stands a good chance of bypassing Darkest Night for intensity and quality. I'm excited and the simple fact that I find myself feeling as if I would be happy reading any one of the storylines presented as a standalone tale tells me I know we have a legendary series in the making. The #0 issue was massive and the #1 issue only builds on the excitement.
Don't miss out. This is the series everyone will soon be discussing!

BRIGHTEST DAY continues, but in ways you can't possibly expect! What does BRIGHTEST DAY mean to the DC Universe? Is everything from here on out going to be bright and shiny? No, BRIGHTEST DAY means something else entirely, something we can't tell you...yet. But we can tell you our heroes will need to rise up more than ever to combat the forces of evil, and a select few will uncover a secret that binds them ALL.
