Hollywood Comes to Columbus with Free Comics

With Golden and Silver Age comics recently selling for over a million dollars an issue, only billionaires like Tony Stark, from Marvel Comic's upcoming summer blockbuster Iron Man 2, can afford to continue to collect the vintage comics. However, the first Saturday in May represents a holiday for comic fans across the world know as Free Comic Book Day, where price is of no real concern. Participating comic store retailers distribute free comics to anyone with no strings attached. A day where anyone can read about and dream of becoming superheroes, introducing millions to the unique art form and storytelling method that has delighted and inspired millions more.

Jamie Colegrove of Packrat Comics in Hilliard explained "As Hollywood continues to adapt comic books in into billion dollar blockbusters, adding more special effects and CGI than either Stan Lee or Jack Kirby could have imagined, the medium remains loyal to its fans and we continue to celebrate and enjoy this truly original and unique American art form." And on occasion, the comics imitate Hollywood , so this year Packrat is bringing Hollywood to Columbus . Joss Whedon's successful television series Buffy The Vampire Slayer continued season eight in comic form entertaining millions with his brilliant story telling. None of his characters were more relatable then that of Xander Harris, a key team member without any notable powers. He was loyal and watchful, kind and courageous even when he was a bit clumsy. Xander Harris, portrayed by Nicholas Brendon who currently stars in the his CBS televisions series "Criminal Minds", will be making a special guest appearance at Packrat on Free Comic Book Day, helping us to remember that there are heroes in all of us even if we can't fly or bend steel.

To celebrate this annual event, Packrat Comics will be hosting their annual Free Comic Book Day party. In addition to all the free swag created exclusively for the event even stars attending the Oscars envy, kids of all ages can enjoy a festival of activities along with video game tournaments and special guest appearances by a multitude of costume characters. Industry icons such as Darryl Banks most notably known for his past work on "Green Lantern", Chris Sprouse who helped create Tom Strong with Alan Moore and whose upcoming work includes DC Comics "Return of Bruce Wayne", Marvel Comics cover artist Josh Medors and many more will be available signing comics and creating sketches for all in attendance. Immediately following an afternoon of comic fun, Packrat will conclude the afternoon with their annual Nerd Night, hosting a charity poker tournament with live bands and comedians entertaining throughout the evening.

Throughout the afternoon Packrat Comics will also be working with The Hero Initiative, a non-profit organization that supports comic creators. The Hero Initiative creates a financial safety net for comic creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. Since inception, the Hero Initiative has been fortunate enough to benefit over 40 creators and their families with over $400,000 worth of much-needed aid, fueled by contributions! It's a chance for everyone to become the hero and give back something to the people who have given so much enjoyment.

So on Saturday, May 1st, stop by your local comic shop, get a free comic, have some fun and maybe one day you too will be selling a comic to the likes of a real life Tony Stark. For additional information contact Jamie Colegrove at (614) 527-8450 or via email at packratcomics@sbcglobal.net.
