Breaking News - DC Announces BRIGHTEST DAY Year-Long Maxiseries

by Russell Burlingame

Fulfilling their earlier promise, DC Entertainment made a 9am announcement through their DC Universe blog The Source. That being, in the aftermath of the mega-hit Green Lantern event Blackest Night will come a 26-issue, biweekly maxiseries running through most of 2010 and part of 2011 called Brightest Day.

DC Executive Editor Dan DiDio told "The Source" that the series would be written by Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps maestros Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi, and would have a revolving art team. While few details were forthcoming regarding who might draw the bulk of the series, DiDio did say that the first issue, a #0 issue, will be handled by Fernando Parasin.

DiDio had told Newsarama's "20 Questions" feature before the new year that while he's still mulling over a potential Wednesday Comics sequel, DC readers should not anticipate a weekly series anytime soon. This seems like an elegant way of staying true to that, and of maintaining demand for Johns and Tomasi's brand of Green Lantern storytelling, which fans have gotten used to seeing all over the place during the eight-plus months of Blackest Night. Taking a page from Marvel's "Dark Reign" playbook, the Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corpsmonthlies will carry a "Brightest Day" banner at the top of their covers for the duration of the year-long event. According to DiDio, other titles--such as Titans and The Flash--will also carry the "Brightest Day" banner if they're considered essential to the story's unfolding drama.

If the film schedule stays on track, Brightest Day should wrap up within six months of the projected release date of the Green Lantern feature film, for which Johns is a technical advisor.
