Scott D.M. Simmons Looks Back on Mid-Ohio-Con
And launches his own photo flood!
Mid-Ohio-Con 2009 was an absolute blast. Saturday was a stellar day in sales, and Sunday was a great day for talking with friends, both old and new. The best part of any show or convention is seeing my friends, getting to know some acquaintances even more, and making new fans. I even managed to end up getting a party together for dinner at Max & Erma's, which was highly successful, made up of my friends from Comic Related and OSWCC, and some of their friends and family.... and snuck in a little birthday cake surprise for Chuck Moore. Not only was it time for Chuck's 40th birthday party, but it was also Comic Related's 5th anniversary. The site was well-represented with a healthy number of the site's members having booths or tables at the show.
On Saturday, I was part of a panel on sketch card art (along with Jamie Snell and few other artists), and even later talked with a girl whose uncle worked at Hasbro with me. It was a great panel, my first, and I think I learned alot myself about the industry, being a newbie to official sketch cards (starting with the Topps Star Wars Clone Wars Widevision series coming this fall). Still, I was able to give the insider's perspective of being brand-new to the game, creating my own sketch cards before landing the gig, and then having to forsake Photoshop and go back to coloring by hand on the actual surface, which is something I haven't done since college. But Prismacolor is my friend again now, haha.
My badge artwork for OSWCC (The Ohio Star Wars Collectors Club) has led to a few great things this year, including meeting many people affiliated with the films, including Steve Sansweet and Anthony Daniels. At Mid-Ohio, I got to meet Ray Park and Daniel Logan from the Star Wars films (Darth Maul and young Boba Fett, respectively). For OSWCC's trip to Mid-Ohio, I had created badge art with Darth Vader, and I was able to give the stars their own badges which my friend Matt Erickson had customized with their names on the bottom.
I also did some artwork on a Hero Initiative t-shirt to be given away in either an auction or raffle... for which I was honored to be asked. I drew Mau from Wannabez, and shared the back side of the t-shirt with such great artists as Chris Sprouse, Mark Texeira, Todd Nauck, Scott Kolins, Jay Fife, and Herb Trimpe. Check their website for further details about the charity! http://www.heroinitiative.org/
There were great memories from the show and around the show. Special thanks go out to Chris and Xan Sprouse, Matt Erickson, David Mack, Jamie Snell, Todd Nauck, and Jackie Hernandez! And as always, James and Bill Henry and Roger Price for inviting me and putting on yet another great convention!
And now, on to the pictures!
