Irredeemable #5

Russell Burlingame on the issue

Irredeemable by Mark Waid, which follows the tale of a Superman-like character who goes from being the world's greatest hero to its biggest villain in a heartbeat, has been consistently one of the best superhero titles in the comics industry since it was introduced by Boom! Studios five months ago, and this week has an embarrassment of relatively low-cost riches for fans of the title.

This week's #5 has been released alongside a collected edition of #1-#4...and while the trade paperback is only $10, #5-the start of the book's second arc and a great jumping-on point for new fans-is only 99 cents. At a time when the "Big Two" publishers are both selling mostly $3.99 monthly comics, a great new book for a buck is the kind of bargain that's hard to pass up...but this particular issue packs more story into it than most mainstream comics.

In spite of Mark Waid's reputation as steward of Silver Age characters and the creator of some of the great long-term runs in comics with The Flash, The Fantastic Four and Captain America, it's his Kingdom Come-like ability to capitalize on great character beats and short-term, high-impact dramatic moments that really make this story sizzle off the page. For a dollar, you can't beat it. Go buy this book. You won't regret it.
