Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #3 (of 3)

Chuck Kennedy on the issue

Had I known that the powers to be were going to give the honor and opportunity to pen this week's Hot Shot Of The Week to a Poozer such as myself, I would have tried to venture out of the comfort of my usual DC heavy pull so that I could have a chance to challenge myself to bring the best choice possible to everyone, but I truly believe it wouldn't have made any difference in my decision.

Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #3 (of 3) burst forth from my weekly pull to joyfully deliver a story that I believe many people have secretly longed for; a story about Kilowog, the Green Lantern of space sector 647 and current drill instructor for all new recruits to the Green Lantern Corps. Unlike most appearances by Kilowog that center around testosterone-fueled slugfests that appeal to the awkward 13 year old boy in all of us, Peter J. Tomasi adds a depth to the character that not only gives us new insight and dimension, but it enhances the familiar characteristics that make Kilowog so much fun to read. If that were all this supporting min-series offered I would have been happy and satisfied, but we are also given an additional story that gives us and expanded origin about Arisia Rrab, the Green Lantern of sector 2815. Like the Kilowog story that precedes it, Tomasi is able to connect Arisia with the reader so that she isn't lost in the background as just another alien with a green ring.

The stories of Kilowog and Arisia don't just share in making each character more real and more dynamic, they build an emotional foundation that will make each character's trials during the Blackest Night special and important to each of us as though they were happening to a friend.

The issue finally closes out by giving us a "Director's Cut" full sketch reproduction of Blackest Night #0 (from Free Comic Book Day) that is loaded with commentary from writer Geoff Johns and editors Eddie Berganza and Adam Schlagman as they give us an inside look into the beginnings of the Blackest Night story.

I wish that every mini-series that was put out to supplement a major story event was as efficient in supporting the story and adding to the enjoyment level. If you're reading Blackest Night (and you SHOULD be) make sure you pick up this series and this book because this is superhero story-telling of the highest quality.
