Tony Bedard and Eric Ratcliffe Discuss R.E.B.E.L.S. #6
Welcome to another REBEL Yell where Tony Bedard and I discuss all things REBELS related. This month saw Vril manage to catch Starro by surprise and had our team gain two members as we looked around the galaxy to see what's going on on other worlds. So let's jump right in!
Eric: So we are back Tony where it looks like to me that the Dominators don't have the right to call themselves that anymore?
Tony: Yeah, they're the Dominated. This is a big setback for the Dominators. We'll see how it plays out, since we know there are still Dominators in the future.
Eric: Vril also seemed to gain a couple new members for his crew?
Tony: Vril's crew is starting to snowball a bit. The situation is fluid, and he needs all the help he can get. We'll see this trend continue as the scale of the invasion grows even larger.
Eric: Is it safe to say that's not the last we've seen of the fleet admiral?
Tony: Yeah, Admiral Xylon will become an ongoing character. He's actually a lot of fun. We're going for a Mars Attacks vibe with him.
Eric: The Encyclopedia Galactica is very Hitchhikers Guide like, were you inspired by that at all?
Tony: Well, I loved the BBC Hitchhiker's Guide series, but really I'm just picking up on something Paul Levitz used to do in his Legion of Super-Heroes tales. It really gave you a sense that there's a whole universe out there to discover. In REBELS I mix in some blurbs from other media sources in their corner of the galaxy, to give a sense of how far-reaching the Starro Invasion is.
Eric: Seems to me Amon has begrudgingly joined up with our crew? Loved the line about not thinking straight.
Tony: Yeah, Amon Hakk has sort of become the comic relief guy. He's a bit whiny for a Khund. We'll have to show him kicking ass some more.
Eric: Is Ciji truly working for those who hired her or herself?
Tony: I think Ciji is operating with a great deal of personal discretion, but her mission was to help Dox restore order to their corner of the galaxy, and i think she's still devoted to that mission. We'll have to do a Ciji-centric issue soon and go a bit deeper with her.
Eric: So far, especially towards the end of the issue, the team actually worked pretty well together for being together for such a short amount of time.
Tony: Yeah, we do want to see that these guys can get their act together.
Eric: So Vril closed off the section of space using his old sentries? That forcefield can't be penetrated leaving this area of the galaxy with Starro pretty much?
Tony: It's a stop gap measure, confining the spread of the invasion, though if you're trapped inside the force field, it can't be much fun. The next few issues will unfold as the invasion is temporarily contained. But the force field can't last forever.
Eric: So we are half a year in, the book is a fan favorite and seems to be slowly gaining a cult following, how are sales?
Tony: Honestly, sales could be better. The book is well liked in the DC offices, and we're looking forward to a sales boost from Blackest Night and some other things we're planning after that, but we need to get the word out about this book!
Eric: What would be the best way for fans and retailers to help with that?
Tony: Just keep spreading the word of mouth, and retailers could leave some room for growth in their orders, instead of ordering to sell out.
Eric: I almost forgot you were going to have a Blackest Night connection. Does that mean a Lantern will be guesting?
Tony: A Black Lantern or three will guest. Details will come later. :-)
Eric: So Tony for issue 7 I'm assuming that it's the "recruitment drive" What else can readers expect?
Tony: You can expect the awesome return of Andy Clarke! He really pulls out the stops on this issue, which also takes us to visit the rarely seen homeworld of the Gil'Dishpan. This book is a whirlwind tour of the DC cosmos, and issue #7 is a stand-out on the tour.
Well that's it for this month readers. See you next month for issue #7. And please: Get your retailers and LCS's to order the book and get the word out!
