NYCC 2012: Cosmic Marvel
Today, Marvel finally confirmed the long rumored news of Brian Michael Bendis launching a Guardians of the Galaxy book. Along with artist Steve McNiven, Bendis takes the helm of the cosmic stalwart in February with a point one issue as part of Marvel NOW!, followed by the official first issue in March.
The team still includes the current team members of Starlord, Groot, Rocket Racoon, Gamora and Drax. But they will also be joined by a new member... Iron Man?! They described the team as the group "to tackle the threats too big for the Avengers." So their mission is going to be a bit different than previous incarnations.

But GotG isn't the only cosmic book joining the Marvel NOW! slate. Nova #1 also debuts in February. This is on the heels of his important role in the recently wrapped Avengers vs. X-Men series where he took down Cyclops long enough to launch the final attack. Nova is helmed by the superstart team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness and features Sam Alexander as Nova, not Richard Ryder.
It's obvious that Marvel is pumping up their cosmic corner leading into the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film. The question is if these books will live up to the expectations of fans of the cosmic titles. Regardless of the talents these big time creators bring, they still have big shoes to fill after what Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning crafted before them.
