NYCC 2012: Green Lantern - The Third Army Arrives
Friday, October 12th, DC gave us some details about the Third Army and what's going down in the Green Lantern titles in the coming months.
What happens when those who have sworn to protect and guard the galaxy turn on it and the peacekeeping corps they created? They raise a new army-a third army-and change things for the Green Lantern Corps and the universe they patrol forever. "Rise of the Third Army" is an epic crossover event that takes place in all four Green Lantern titles, and it's just getting started. Where do things go from here now that the Third Army has risen? And what role will Simon Baz, the rough-edged and untested new Green Lantern of Earth, play in the events?
New GLNG artist Aaron Kuder began things with a teaser image (below) saying that it was fun to introduce a new character at this point in the story in Green Lantern: New Guardians #15. This is part of the "Rise of the Third Army" story arc. Writer Peter Tomasi added "You'll see some pretty intense stuff happening in those books coming out...the rise is right now but it will turn into an all-out war with the Guardians being the bad guys."
A lot of fans of new GL Simon Baz were in attendance at the panel. After Green Lantern #13, Guy Gardner experiences a lot of "bad mojo." Baz looks to Guy for help on how to use the ring, and the two end up teaming up in an unpredictable way to take on the Third Army. This is the cover to issue #16:
Speaking of Gardner, Tomasi noted that there would be some "serious bloodletting" in the Green Lantern Corps Annual (image below), as well as some pretty off the wall stuff.
Going back to GLNG for a moment, McCallum said that the annual to that series would introduce "worst Green Lantern of them all."
Things really heat up in Red Lanterns as they are the first to be hit by The Third Army. It will be split into three different stories following Atrocitus, Bleez and Dex-Starr respectively. Dex-Starr heads to Earth on his own to hunt down and kill Midnighter. Atrocitus, on the other hand, will be helped by blood-magic fueled Manhunters as he seeks revenge on the Guardians.
The panel was then opened for fan questions. Among the fan comments was a suggestion for Dexx-Star to face off against Krypto, which really intrigued the crowd in attendance.
Also of note was that there are eventual plans for Black Hand, there is a known end to the Third Army story, and we'll learn more about Larfleeze's past and family, which includes an important scene with Star Sapphire.
