NYCC 2012: DC COMICS - THE NEW 52: Superman

Thursday, October 11th, DC made some announcements for the Superman family on the first day of the 2012 New York Comic Con:

"From the large-scale excitement of Superman, to the thoughtful take on Superman's early days in Action Comics, to the high-flying exploits of Kal-El's cousin, Supergirl, to the distinctly different visions of the Man of Steel presented in Superman: Earth One and Superman Family Adventures, there's plenty of red and blue action for everyone. But where will that action take us over the next few months? Well, we're about to find out..."

That's the text DC post on their blog hyping the panel that took place yesterday. On the panel were moderator Bob Wayne, group editor Matt Idelson, Scott Lobdell (Superman), Grant Morrison (Action Comics), and Mahmud Asrar (Supergirl), Mike Johnson (Supergirl), Andy Diggle (Action Comics)and Tony Daniel (Action Comics)and some special guests.

Here are some highlights from the panel:

Morrison talked about how an unnamed villain (a "Super Doomsday") will bring Superman "lots of pain" in Action Comics #15 in December.

The Action Comics Annual, written by Sholly Fisch, takes Steel in a new direction that "no one was expecting." What you can expect to see in it is Luthor, Lois and Jimmy, and Superman and Kryptonite Man hitting each other. Idelson noted that the backup feature in the annual is "the most deranged thing you've ever seen." The backup is written by Max Landis.

And Superman's powers will be tested in the H'el on EARTH crossover. The Justice League enters the fray to help with something "relaly big." Lots of changes are promised in the story for the Superman family.

They showed an image of Superboy wearing Superman's Kryptonian armor. Superboy will team up with Batman in H'el on Earth.

The Flash makes a guest appearance over in Supergirl as a serious character lurks in the background as seen below in the H'el on Earth crossover also. The story is called "The Fastest Girl on Earth." Asrar commented that he was really excited about The Flash being in the book and being able to draw his super speed.

Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel take over Action Comics and said that Superman #0 that came out in September gives a clue as to why Superman is wearing the new black costume as seen below. Diggle sayd that it was "ridiculously exciting to be writing Superman, and incredibly terrifying to be following Grant Morrison." Daniel added that he had wanted to work with Diggle for some time.

Next came the special guests: Jim Lee and Scott Snyder! Apparently the two are teaming up for a new, unnamed Superman title. 2013 is the 75th anniversary of Superman, so they are adding a title to the family. They were waiting for the right creative team and things just worked out this way. Lee said that Snyder told him this incredible story and he started seeing it in his mind immediately. Snyder said that "this is the Superman story I'd tell if I could only tell one before they kicked me right off," promising a lot of intimacy and American History.

They finished up by talking about Superman: Earth One Volume 2 in which Eddie Berganza stated "Superman is a kid learning a lot of things, including the potential of his powers. A lot of people don't trust this guy in tights flying around above them."
