The Genuine Imitation Jonesing Bogart Library!

by Art Bowshier

I was looking through the Digital Comic Museum and came across Fairy Tale Parade by Dell Publishing. As you can see the style is illustrative. I think most of the art and stories are by Walt Kelly in the days before Pogo. I like the format stylings especially-- the panel shapes and flourishes between the panels and the title above the stories... It sets these apart from the run of the mill comic. Even back then.

There six or seven 60 + page books in the series, I couldn't get it out of my head how much his styles--plural --would lend itself to the formatting and little illustrative flourishes between the panels. Fairy Tale Parade is mostly kid stories, but, I gravitated to the Arabian Nights Tales of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves, Aladdin, and Sinbad. Which I recognized that Kelly took many sources to a higher level. Just take a gander for your self and see what you think of it all.
