Kav's Tips for Comic Artists - Easter Eggs

by A. "Kav" Kaviraj

Comic book artist, A. Kaviraj, continues his op/ed series of providing useful tutorials for comic book artists.

One thing that has become more popular and which started in movies is putting 'Easter Eggs' in your stories. An 'Easter Egg' is an inside joke that readers and viewers get pleasure from finding. One well known Easter Egg is the 'Oscillation Overthruster' from Buckaroo Bonzai in an episode of Star Trek the Next Generation.

Here's the Millenium falcon in the Borg battle from 'First Contact':

Comics also have Easter eggs.

Here's a hidden message from Conan #8 by Barry (WINDSOR!) Smith:

I like to stuff my pages with Easter Eggs. Here's a page from 'Dr Death vs the Zombie' (2.0). This is a graphic novel that myself and writer Tony Wright completed, based upon the character in the short story by Aaron Schutz. We completed the 120 page project, then decided we could do better, so we revamped it with better story, better art, digital lettering and color. If anyone else has ever completed a graphic novel then completely redid it, I'd sure like to hear about it as I believe we are the first!

This is a scene in the clinic where Doc works, and look who I used for his co-workers! It's sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker! Bah ha ha!

Here's another page in which we see Queen Neferteri from 'The Ten Commandments' as a Vegas showgirl in panel 1, and Danny Glover from Predator 2 in panel 3! Easter Eggs make drawing more fun. And if you are having fun with something, usually the quality is better. It also makes it fun to read.

And here's page 23-I put the Zombie skull from Dr. Death on the shelf in panel one.

Here's page 11 - I made the school Ridgemont High, from 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High'

And page 5 - the bus in panel one is '2525'-from the movie 'Speed'!

On page 7 from 'Dr Death vs the Master Mind' we see Doc has a copy of Action Comics #1 in the first panel!

Hey, if it's good enough for Hollywood, it's good enough for me! Easter Eggs rule! Happy Hunting.
