Invincible #100: The Death of... Everyone!
Posted by Brant W. Fowler
Today, Image Comics released what appears to be the definitive final teaser for Invincible #100. For the past six days, we have seen teasers featuring six major characters in the title, and now we get them all grouped together with the tag line "The Death of Everyone."
We have all seen hype in comics more times than we can count, so it's nothing new. But seeing as it's Robert Kirkman, there is some believability to the hype. Kirkman has proven in both The Walking Dead and Invincible that all bets are off. This could potentially hint at a brand new cast after this arc, or even - shudder the thought - the definitive ending to Invincible!
Solicitations for November titles from Image hit CR today and have already been released early elsewhere. In them is the solicitation for Invincible #98, the beginning of this arc. Here's how it reads:
"THE DEATH OF EVERYONE," Part One
The countdown to issue #100 begins here - with the story that will change EVERYTHING for Invincible! Mark's powers have finally returned, just in time for every life on Earth to rest in his hands. But what will happen when everyone learns that what is happening... is Mark's fault?
So, obviously Kirkman is building up to something very big here. Could it be time to say farewell to these characters we have come to love, and possibly the entire book? Stay tuned in the months ahead for all the answers.
This Monday's teaser indicated Omni-Man, Invincible's father as the potential death victim. Invincible has had a shaky relationship with his father to put it mildly. The two nearly killed each other early on in the book when Omni-Man decided to overthrow Earth on behalf of their people, the Viltrumites. Later on, they reconciled as Invincible learned his father had a whole other life, including another son. The two battled against and with the Viltrumites at different points since.
Friday's fifth teaser was of Oliver Grayson, aka Young Omni-Man (formerly Kid Omni-Man, a name which Invincible teased him oveR), younger half-brother of Mark Grayson, aka Invincible. In this teaser, Oliver appears to be the worse for wear and terrified at whatever's coming at him. While most of the teasers have shown the characters knocked out, this one and Atom Eve's show the battle still raging on.
Thursday's teaser featured Atom Eve, a very pivotal character in Invincible and on again/off again love interest of the titular character. Oh, she also got pregnant with Mark's child. So suffice it to say, if she's the one to die, it will leave an extremely large impact on the book and each of the characters, especially the titular character. Though, hers is the first teaser where she still looks very full of life and ready to fight. But looks can be deceiving...
Wednesday's teaser featured Robot, who debuted in Invincible #2 and has been featured in the series as a very important character to the superhero community. His death would have definite consequences in the world of Invincible.
Tuesday's teaser image featured Allen the Alien, a guy who started off as a enemy and was used as a villain throughout. The two became friends and have fought side by side as well. Given his ties to the Viltrumites, his death could impact the entire Invincible universe.
Monday's teaser image featured Invincible himself, which obviously would cause quite the shake-up.
The issue should come out in early 2013, and October's issue #97 sets the stage for the events leading up to the monumental 100th issue.
Kirkman struck gold with The Walking Dead, and delivered a big punch to fans of the series in the pages of its 100th issue just recently. While character deaths are rare in Invincible, expect some major stuff to go down in Invincible #100.
