The Genuine Imitation Jonesing Bogart Library!
by Art Bowshier
Reed Crandal-- best known for his work on BLACKHAWK for Quality Comics was one of the masyers of comic book story telling with his artwork. He studied at the Cleveland Institiue of Art wanting to be an illustrator. His version of the Ray was different than the recently revamped version. The Ray gained his powers from a lightning strike. Crandall also drew Dollman, and then worked prominently for EC . In the following public domain story borrorwed from the files of the Digital Comic Museum, the story has been cleaned on the sides and gutters to get rid of the yellowing pages of near seventy years. Artists of the golden age did in 6,7,8, and 9 page stories what takes twenty today. You can see by the thin graceful lines that Crandall had to influence Mike Kaluta amf others. As an over the top character and story as the Ray is, the artwork grounded the story.
