Get Out the Chapstick!
by Brant W. Fowler
Today, July 6th is International Kissing Day (or World Kiss Day), and in honor of it, I thought it would be fun to look at some of the more memorable kissing couples in the world of comics. From Batman and Catwoman, to Wolverine and Jean Grey, there has been a LOT of kissing in the four color world. This article only barely scratches the surface. Take a look at the kisses below and see if you recall them happening. Don't see your favorite kissing moment in comics? Post below and let us know what it is! In no particular order...
BATMAN & CATWOMAN

The Caped Crusader and the villainous that he can't get out of his mind. Their "relationship" dates all the way back to Batman #3 when the teasing Catwoman began planting one on Batman in order to escape. Their game of Bat and Cat, as it were, escalated over the years, and as we saw in the first issue of the DC New 52 Catwoman, certainly went to the next level. Lovers destined to be, or a tragedy in the making? Whatever the case may be, I don't think either one of them is complaining at the moment.

WOLVERINE & JEAN GREY

It's no secret that Logan always had a thing for redheads. We saw the possible reason for that played out in ORIGINS years ago. And his crush on Jean spilled over into the movies also. The crush has always been there, and the two have flirted with the idea many times over the years. During Grant Morrison's run on the X-titles, Logan and Jean were a featured cover in the memorable embrace seen above that has been duplicated many times since. That wasn't their first kiss, nor their last, and with Jean Grey returning and Scott now spoken for, who knows what will happen next?

PETER PARKER & MARY JANE

Speaking of redheads, one can't forget the famed relationship between Peter Parker and the love of his life, Mary Jane. Whether you prefer Gwen over MJ or not, you have to admit that the relationship between Spidey and MJ was epic.. until Marvel wiped it away like it never existed, of course.

ARCHIE & BETTY/ARCHIE & VERONICA

The classic love triangle between these three kids from Riverdale is one of the most epic love stories in all of comics, even if it is with a humor bent. I personally grew up on Archie Comics, and these timeless stories (and this timeless romance) still resonates today. In recent years, we've seen what happens when Archie marries either of these two and the different path his life takes. Are you for Betty or Veronica?

GAMBIT & ROGUE

So many people hate Gambit as a character, but the romance between he and Rogue is classic storytelling at its best. It's a tragic romance in that the two are madly in love but can never be together. Sure, over time they are eventually able to be together, but there's always that divide between them because of Rogue's soul-sucking power. Add Magneto to the mix - a guy who can actually be with Rogue due to his own powers - and it wrenches the heart even more. When Gambit and Rogue do kiss, though, they make it meaningful.

SUPERMAN & LOIS LANE

No list of comic kisses would be complete without mentioning Superman and the love of his life, Lois Lane. Through decades and many incarnations, from the comics to the small screen to the big screen, these two have always had one heck of a romantic story. I mean, Superman is in a love triangle... with himself! Bumbling Clark Kent is in love with Lois Lane, who in turn is in love with Superman. Eventually she falls in love with Clark too and all is well. At least until the DC relaunch...

NIGHTWING & BATGIRL

They were childhood heroes; both prodigies of Batman, and eventually they fell in love. I remember on the TV show how Robin was always jealous of Batgirl and there was this tension between them. In the comics, as the original Robin, Dick Grayson came into his own as Nightwing he and Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon found love. It faded, but it was a special relationship - one that probably helped define future relationships for them both. Even in the New 52, their past relationship is mentioned and they remain friends and very close.

And that's just to name a few. The list could go on forever. Captain America & Shannon Carter, Luke Cage & Jessica Jones, Iron Man and, well... a LOT of women, Black Cat & Spider-Man, Grifter & Zealot, Invincible & Atom Eve, Thor & Jane Foster, and so on and so forth. These are just a few that stood out to me.
