Secret Avengers Gets New Artist
Back in January, we showed you how ecstatic we were for Rick Remender and Gabriel Hardman to come aboard Secret Avengers. Since then, Remender has continued to build the team dynamic and position the book right alongside his Uncanny X-Force saga as one of the must-read team books at Marvel. After handling some Avengers vs. X-Men tie-ins, Remender is ready to kick his Masters of Evil storyline into high gear with issue #29, but he's taking a new artist along for the ride.
Matteo Scalera (Deadpool, Valen the Outcast) is primed and ready to continue the title's long line of fantastic artistry. "The Masters of Evil story is one that I had been cooking up with Gabe for some time, so we were all disappointed when he and Bettie [Breitweiser] couldn't join us again due to commitments elsewhere. Thank God we were able to get Matteo Scalera and colorist Matt Wilson to join us so that we have an ongoing team of an equal caliber," Remender told me. "They are as good as it gets and I'm very excited for people to see what they're doing as the new ongoing art team on Secret Avengers."
He continued, "Matteo is an artist I have had my eye on for years now and I couldn't be happier that we finally found a project together. He has God-given chops in both illustration and storytelling, a rare breed. And he somehow gets better and better every few months. Watching the way his inking style has developed as well has been incredibly exciting. He understands light source, weight, how to spot black, where to keep things clean and open and where to dump in the texture. His line work has so much natural rhythm and motion it's hard to imagine anyone else inking him."
Remender gave colorist Wilson plenty of credit for the look of the book, too. "Matt and I have worked together on books like X-Force, The End League, and Gigantic and I'm a huge fan of his work as well. He's a very sought-after colorist and we were lucky to land him."
Admittedly, the recent tie-ins to AvX have postponed Remender's larger story to some degree. Fans will be happy to hear, then, that Secret Avengers #29 gets right back into the swing of things. "The next ten issues of Secret Avengers are one big story continuing on what was started in The Descendants arc. It is also a continuation of what Ed [Brubaker] and Warren [Ellis] had done with Shadow Council in the series up into this point. We will finally see what Max Fury is really up to and the purpose of his relationships with the Shadow Council, the new Masters of Evil, and the Descendants," said Remender. "It was very important to everyone that all of the great stuff that Ed and Warren started get a big payout. We want Secret Avengers to feel cohesive and so the next ten issues build on almost everything that's come before."
Finally, Remender added, "If you haven't been reading the series up to this point go pick up the Descendants trade paperback and then hop right in to issue #29 for some of the most gorgeous artwork I have ever been associated with."
Secret Avengers #29 is due for release in July.
