DC Takes on HE-MAN

By the Power of Grayskull! Still making blockbuster announcements, DC Entertainment brings He-Man back to comics with a brand new MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSEŽ comic series beginning in July. The describe it as "an entirely new take on the storied warrior who celebrates his 30th anniversary this year."

The series will be a six-issue limited series writtn by James Robinson with pencils and inks by Phillip Tan and Ruy Jose respectively.

In the new series, Robinson reintroduces the Masters of the UniverseŽ to comic readers with Skeletor having won a major victory and rewriting the world of Eternia where he now rules from Castle Grayskull and the Masters have no memory of their former glory. Adam is a simple woodsman haunted by dreams of a heroic warrior, wielding a powerful sword in battle. He is found by a mysterious sorceress who tells him his dreams are of the way the world should be, that he is Eternia's champion He-Man. Adam sets off on a quest to regain his power and reawaken the Masters of the Universe.

MTV Geek recently spoke with Robinson about the upcoming series, who said that "the challenge is to write something that raises the standard for the series, with a cool, modern story that nevertheless honors the fans of the animated series and toy line."

Robinson goes on to say that his take on the characters is meant to be a way to introduce them to a new generation with fresh and compelling ways. He says of Prince Adam that he's in a place where he's trying to reconnect with what it means to be He-Man. Like in Greek mythology, a lot of the past and history of his legacy comes into play.

As for the main villain, Skeletor, in response to him sometimes being silly, Robinson said "He's terrifying. Period." They are transforming the famed character we know from the cartoons and toys into a villain worthy of He-Man - a barbarian warrior with a skull face who wants Adam's head on a plate.

Robinson and Tan are going to try to get as many of the familiar characters in the series, if only in a cameo at the end. The sorceress plays a role, and Orko may appear.
