The Voice Actor of the Lost in Space Robot has Died

Longtime radio and TV announcer Dick Tufeld passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2012, at the age of 85. A cause of death was not named, but Tufeld had heart disease and had been in declining health after a fall last year. Tufeld's best-known role was as Robbie the Robot from the 1960's TV series Lost in Space, memorably intoning "Danger, Will Robinson!" and other famous catchphrases such as, "That does not compute." Tufeld was also the announcer for the TV shows Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Time Tunnel, and Disney's Zorro and prime-time anthology series. Tufeld's career also encompassed radio broadcasts starting in 1949, as well as sports and news announcers for TV and radio and commercial voice-over work.

Tufeld was also the narrator for several animated series, including the 1978 Fantastic Four series, Thundarr the Barbarian, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. He would also provide narrator or announcer roles (as in 1992's Garfield and Friends and in Histeria!), and reprised Robbie the Robot (or a variation on him) on The Simpsons.
