Amy and Rory Will Leave Dr. Who
Sad news for fans of Arthur Darvill and Karen Gillan, who play Doctor Who's current Companions, Rory and Amy Pond: they're leaving the show in 2012. And in case you think we're reporting rumors, nope, it's true, and this time... Steven Moffat said it.
After a London screening of the upcoming Christmas Special, "The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe," 'Who' Executive Producer Moffat addressed the crowd, saying, "The final days of the Ponds are coming. I'm not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end."
Doctor Who himself - Matt Smith - has also weighed in on the departure: ""We had the most incredible journey. We took over the show and we've really had to hold hands and help each other through it. So it's very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration, and that's what galvanizes it and pushes it forwards."
The implication here is that Smith will be continuing as the Doctor, while Amy and Rory go into the wild blue (box) yonder. This was seemingly confirmed by Moffat, who said that Smith would be getting, "A new friend," though wouldn't confirm whether said friend would be a he, she, or it.
For those of you who have no idea what we're talking about here - and for goodness sake, why are you reading this article then? - Doctor Who usually travels with a Companion or two, human sidekicks who act as the entry point for new viewers to understand what's going on in the show, and often to fall into peril only to be saved by the immortal Timelord Doctor.
Gillan and Darvill are the latest, and came on the show two years ago with Smith when he took over the title role in the show. Over the past two years, they've been killed multiple times, married, had a kids or two, had one of those kids grow into Alex Kingston, and even became a famous fashion model or something.
The upcoming Christmas Special may - or may not - feature Gillan and Darvill, as it takes place during World War II, but also as it picks up on the status quo changer from the end of this past season. Specifically that The Doctor is now believed dead by the Universe at large, though Amy and Rory know differently (though The Doctor doesn't know they know differently).
In any event, they may show up for a cameo, but it seems like the upcoming 2012 season will prominently focus on wrapping up the Pond storyline for good. The question does become, who's next for the TARDIS... But we'll save that speculation for another time (or blog post).
