Brian Michael Bendis to Leave the Avengers

Last week in an interview with Comic Book Resources, Brian Michael Bendis revealed that he will be leaving the Avengers titles at the end of 2012. After serving as the writer for the main Avengers titles since 2004, Bendis plans to wrap up his 8-year run in a big way.

Many readers may recall that Bendis was the architect behind Avengers Disassembled, which splintered off into the various events we've seen over the past near-decade. From Civil War, to Secret Invasion, to Siege, Fear Itself and everything between, it all can be traced back to that fateful day that the Avengers disbanded under Bendis' guiding hand.

Bendis stated that he would be wrapping up both Avengers and New Avengers, and "at the same time, the first storyline of 'Avengers Assemble' will be done." Continuing, Bendis said, "It's a good time to move on to other things. Before I go, though, I'm ending things big. I'm in countdown mode."

Bendis claims he's been on the Avengers title longer than anyone in the history of the book having written over 200 issues. Taking a note from showbiz, he plans to go out on top.

In the interview, Bendis talked about his plans for the Avengers in the upcoming year leading up to his departure. With Norman Osborn free and having been offered control of H.A.M.M.E.R. once more, the Avengers find themselves at odds with the former villain. And Osborn isn't the only adversary that has an agenda. Bendis noted agendas of Hydra, the Hand, A.I.M. and others. He said "the ideals of the Avengers are going to be pushed to the limits."

The writer didn't state what he'd be moving on to after his final Avengers book, but 2013 would appear to be a completely different landscape for the Marvel Universe.

Is Bendis leaving a good thing or a bad thing in your opinion? Have you enjoyed his run on the books, or is it time for a change? Leave a comment below.
