5 Q-Squared
Five Quick Questions with Ron Randall
1) What's the book, Ron?
Ron: The "book" for now is a website re-presentation of the original Trekker stories that I created for Dark Horse Comics back in the early days of the rise of the independent publishers. "Trekker" is Mercy St. Clair a young, gifted, driven female bounty hunter in the year 2226. Since many of today's comic fans haven't seen the character, I am posting ALL the existing stories one page per day on the website. Once all those stories are there, I will be presenting brand new tales to carry on with the adventures and the "life story" of the main character, exploring both her own development as a person and the world of the 23rd century.
2) Where can we get it and how much is it?
Ron: The website is trekkercomic.com, and every page will be posted there free. My goal is to collect the stories in a series of volumes. But I've just recently launched the website, so no collected books are available yet.
3) What's Really Cool about this book?
Ron: It's a smart, sexy sci-fi tale with action and atmosphere. I get to create a world that blends some of the romanticism of classic sci-fi comics like Flash Gordon with the grittier, down-to-earth texture of BladeRunner. And Mercy tracks down everything from mass-murderers to mutated monsters. And while each story is a complete adventure, I am also chronicling the whole life-arc of the main character. So the depth and breadth of the series grows over time.
4) What did you enjoy about (working on) this?
Ron: With Trekker, I had the chance to create a series that has everything that I want to draw-- a strong, compelling female lead character, a sci-fi setting, and stories that work both as stand-alone action adventures, but also reward the reader for sticking with the title for the long haul as they see the world and character evolve over time.
5) What's next for you?
Ron: More Trekker! Even as I am publishing all the existing Trekker stories (which I am scanning from the originals for the cleanest possible images), I am drawing new tales that will continue the series. I have a long way to go and many tales yet to tell.
