Before I could review this book I had to pry it out of the hands of my nine year old son. Considering the book was competing with an x-box and the online Lego universe game he is currently obsessed with I consider that high praise indeed. Even higher praise is that I was waiting impatiently in line to read it myself. I am a huge Pearls before Swine fan and this collection did not disappoint. If you are unfamiliar with Pearls Before Swine it is definitely in the same family as The Far Side or a more grown up Calvin and Hobbs. It follows the characters of a cynical and hedonistic rat, a slow witted pig, the educated goat, the ignorant, inept crocodiles and the sensitive liberal zebra who evades their plots. But saying all of this does not feel like it does any of the humor justice. Suffice to say that any comic that can combine elaborate puns, drinking jokes and a plot line that involves replacing the punchlines of Family Circus with the complete speeches of Benito Mussolini is ok in my book.
