Wizard World Austin 2011 - Friday Update
by Cary Kelley
And now...the last convention of the season!
Wizard World Austin started today, on Veteran's day and runs through the weekend.
The Friday debut was a bit of departure from conventions of the past simply because they opted for a later opening and a much later closing time. Rather than running a regular show time during the day the show opened at 4 pm and ran until 9 pm to take advantage of the folks getting out of work and giving them time to get down to the convention center and rock the con fun! While I wouldn't call it a rousing success, I also wouldn't say it was a bad idea either.
The traffic we got was pretty decent and sales were brisk at times, without being completely dead or busy beyond belief. Costumers were already out in force even with the later time and shorter hours. Of these, the Star Wars costumers accounted for the largest part of that population, with storm troopers and Jedi making a big splash.
Tomorrow will be brutal, mark my words.
