Sapphire Gypsy on the issue!

Detective #1

No joke, Detective #1 bothered me so much when I was reading it at work I'm typing this while it's all still fresh in my head. Which I guess is a statement on the book in and of itself. There are some things that simply bothered me about the issue and didn't allow me to enjoy it. While at it's heart is the classic Batman set up; Batman chasing down Joker, running from the cops, saving a little girl instead of getting the bad guy, I left the book feeling underwhelmed which is not something you want from a number one. The artwork was lovely, except for one page that there was just something off and it stopped me dead in my tracks, which is about the time that my interest in the story should have carried me through to the next panel but it didn't. As a matter of fact it was at this point that I actually put the book down and walked away from it. I had to convince myself to continue reading it this morning.

While I'm sure a lot of die hard Batman fans might not agree with me, I felt like some of the more "disturbing" visuals were there simply to prove a "Joker's crazy" point, that really should have been able to be translated in the text instead of filling several panels with his trademark laughter. I see them as missed opportunities to drive the story forward. It's sad that while I know, from experience with comics, that clearly there will be more going on later in this series I'm not driven to pick up the rest of the series and in the end isn't that what the story should have done?

Sapphire Gypsy, AKA Sapph, of the Nerd Girls' Eye View has been a comic and gamer girl for as long as her dad could convince her to read/play. Although her love for comics has grown in recent years she's always thought of herself as a nerd and has recently branched out into the world of costuming as well. Be sure to check out Sapph and the girls in the Nerd Girls' Eye View every Thursday.
