Avengers: X-Sanction Coming in December 2011

by Brant W. Fowler

On Monday, Marvel Comics released a teaser image simply showing the Avengers "A" symbol in a crosshairs with the tag "December 2011" as seen below. They followed this up with a live blog on Tuesday, September 13th on Marvel.com with Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness and Tom Brevoort.

During the blog, it was revealed that the teaser referred to a pivotal four-issue mini-series launching in December called Avengers X-Sanction. It was noted that this is the event teased at San Diego Comic-Con International this year as Cable Reborn.

Loeb talked about his affection for the character as it was the first monthly book he ever worked on at Marvel in the 1990s. "I always saw Cable as very much the Captain America of the X-Men." said Loeb, "A soldier from out of time who cared deeply for the people he worked with."

Loeb specifically wanted McGuinness on this story. As for the story, it explores how Cable survived Second Coming, and may reveal that Hope has something to do with the Avengers.

Tom Brevoort said, "This story puts Cable in a situation where he's surrounded by and dealing with characters he doesn't normally. It's not just another story with Cable and the X-Men."

Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso made note that it was no coincidence that Avengers: Children's Crusade, X-Men: Schism and Fear Itself all end around the same time, so we can assume that the culmination of all those events somehow ties into this story.

Brevoort called this story "richly fulfilling" in that "The idea of Cable as a man out to protect his daughter by any means necessary gives the character an emotional heft and underlines everything he does."

The gist of the story is Hope is in some kind of danger, so Cable comes back to help her. Loeb also noted that this is no secret mission, and whatever Cable is up to will raise some eybrows and have some "pretty important people and leaders in the X-Men community" stepping in at some point.

Loeb compared Cable to the Punisher saying, "Cable is not quite as dark as The Punisher, but I think a reason he has resonated and stayed around as long as he has is that he's a total bad ass who believes the ends justify the means."

He also elaborated on the connection between this story and the events previously mentioned, saying "This is a story that has an impact from the past, but is very much the beginning of what is coming in 2012."

Loeb continued to elaborate on the character of Cable, saying he had much in common with not only Captain America, but also with Iron Man in that Iron Man is a futurist, and Cable is from the future. They have a lot of similarities beyond that as well, like Cable with his techno-virus and Stark's physical complications.

The story is a solo mission, but some others may get involved. It begins during an Avengers mission complicated by the sudden apperance of Cable.

In a poll asked by Marvel of which Avenger fans would most like to see Cable take on, the winning votes went to Captain America, followed by (in order) Iron Man, Thor, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, and Spider-Woman.
