Spawn #209

David O'Leary on the issue!

Remember this book? I gave up on it a long time ago but it never went away. The continuity got far too complicated to jump back in at any stage until recently when Image made a huge direction change and killed off the original Spawn, Al Simmons. In doing so and also by having a new man don the symbiote, readers like myself can jump back in as the book moves in a fresh new direction and enjoy a book that has gone under many people radar's.

I have been following the book now for several issues and with each new issue it becomes apparent just how great this title has become once more. It doesn't do the book any harm that the current story is Sam and Twitch-centric, two of my all time favourite characters. With Sam Burke still in hospital unconscious, Twitch forms an uneasy alliance with the new Spawn to one, tell Jim the history of the Spawn so he can understand what he now has gotten himself into and two, use Jim to help Sam get regain consciousness. But on arrival at hospital Twitch is witness to the aftermath of the massacre that occurred last issue where Detective Rowand interrupted an attempt on Sam's life by a demon who killed many of the staff. We see that the demon was working for the Clown and he isn't finished yet with his evil plans.

Szymon Kudranski on art has unbelievable talent. Over the last several issues I have witnessed exceptional images that combine moody tonal pencils and complementary computer aids. His dark story telling isn't lost in ink and shadow but excels instead to push the book to another level.

I am reconverted and I encourage you to do likewise. The book is so enjoyable once more to read. It evokes memories of my young self reading the original issues in regard the excitement each new issue brought. I gave Spawn a second chance and this book only adds to the growing stable of outstanding storytelling coming out of Image lately. You could do much worse than to look once more to this title.
