Hot Shot Of The Week
Fantastic Four #588 (Marvel Comics)

A few days late to be sure but there really couldn't be any other choice for the Hot Shot this week as Marvel's first family react to the death of one of their own. Steve Epting is not on art this issue but Nick Dragotta stands in with aplomb. Hickman starts the book without dialogue and lets Dragotta tell the story using striking visuals. Among the most powerful of the issue is Sue surrounded by a force bubble while Reed's fingers crawls around it fruitlessly trying to comfort his wife.

I felt it was important to pay the right amount of respect to Johnny in this issue and not go completely overboard with his death like Marvel did with the death of The Sentry last year. Hickman writes an amazing obituary to one of Marvel's finest.

The future of the FF is going to be an interesting one and the supporting characters are going to be playing their part in it too. Valeria is being teed up to play a pivotal role in the coming months. The dynamic with Ben minus his Bud will be interesting too, he takes the loss of Johnny particularly hard in this issue.

Hickman is on an upward swing at the moment with his writing and his book last issue was Marvel's first in months to reach over 100,000 sales in a month so I'm sure Marvel is happy for that. It has been a book deserving of more readers for a while now as Hickman is weaving a long tapestry with beats that are taking months to pay off. Don't be fooled if you think Johnny will stay gone but it still takes something special to pull the heart strings in comics these days.

From The Publisher:

Following the death of Johnny Storm, we spend a month seeing how the remaining members of the Fantastic Four, the extended family, other heroes, and prominent villains react to the loss of this legendary hero. It's the epilogue to THREE: A Month of Mourning. PLUS: The Amazing Spider-Man consoles Franklin Richards in a second all-new tale!

Fantastic Four #588 is $3.99 from Marvel Comics
and was on sale since Wednesday 23rd February 2011
