On the same week that Fantastic Four #587 comes out it may be surprising to some that the Hot Shot this week is Cap #614. But in recent months Ed Brubaker has regained the consistency that had eluded him since sometime last Spring. I had accused the title of suffering Buffy syndrome with its up and down story telling but it appears that with the Trial of Captain America story arc Bru & Co. have regained the magic that had this book at the very top of the pile for many including myself.

One thing that I must applaud Bru for doing is his building up of Sin as a strong female antagonist. She isn't written as a stereotypical femme and it's nice to see a female villain in a comic that doesn't use sexuality as a selling tool to pull in readers. In saying that she is psychotic and as her plan unfolds to poison the public's perception of Bucky we see the very beginnings of a come back for the embattled sidekick-cum-main event. The final page is golden in which we see Bucky finally appear to embrace the mantle in its entirety and confront Sin to finish a period of his history that he would rather have stayed hidden. I'm also a fan of how Bru dips into the well to take an old Marvel villain called Master Man and use him as a tool in the story without launching some lame new character that wouldn't last outside the confines of the book.

One selling point of the book that was on a par with Bru's writing down the years was the art. With a confined art pool to pick form the book nearly always had a great look and in this arc we have Butch Guice on art and he partly inks himself with some of the best inkers in the business.

The book looks great and this arc is really firing on all cylinders and it is awesome to see the title back to its best and its worthy of this weeks Hot Shot Of The Week.
