Life In Four Colors Movie Review
I almost didn’t want to do a review on this film, initially. The main reason being is that I never read the Wanted graphic novel by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, published by Top Cow entertainment. Then I reminded myself it is after all a MOVIE review, not a book review, or even a commentary on how well the original source material was adapted to the big screen. After seeing the feature film I now know I will be buying this book in the VERY NEAR future and must admit I am a little curious about how closely it follows the graphic novel.
As I was watching the ending credits roll by with my wife, who surprisingly enough wanted to go with me to see the movie with me, I noticed two credits that stood out. Mark Millar and J. G. Jones…executive producers. Even fellow top Cow talent Marc Silversti was involved in the making of the film. All of which to me seems like it is a good indication it should have been somewhat adapted true to its original form.
I’ve got to say…..this movie rocked!!!! This has been an incredible movie year already for comic book fans with Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk films, both of which I really, really liked……but this movie rocked!!!!
Even with a wave of more Comic Related movies just a few days away (Hannock, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army and Batman: Dark Knight) I really think it’s going to be difficult for any of those films to come close to this one…yes even Dark Knight.
I know a few people who said they weren’t sure they wanted to see this film because it “looked too much like the Matrix”…..I’m here to tell you right now…..this isn’t the Matrix. Speaking of that film…there is a basis of comparison I can make between it and this one. Remember the first time you saw the Matrix? The very first film. If you were like me you walked away from the theatre thinking to yourself….I’ve never seen anything like that before in my life. And that was the strength of that film…and its curse. The Matrix was so original, so ground-breaking…..nobody could ever come close to duplicating its initial success. Including the people who made the Matrix….and they tried to do so. Twice.
Like the Matrix before it….Wanted is a film experience with a very similar feel to it. You will see things you never saw done in a movie before….and may never see again.
The movie stars Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, and for all you die hard comic book geeks out….rapper turned actor, Common, rumored to be playing John Stewart/Green Lantern in the Justice League film and a comic book film legend…Terence Stamp……the voice of Jor-El’ from the Smallville television series, General Zod from Superman II, and Stick from Elektra (the only thing good about that film.)
As I said before….I really liked this film. It had all the elements I want in a movie. Great cast, very good acting, developing characterization, a lot of action (but not empty going through the motions stuff), intriguing story, a pumping soundtrack and just enough humor and …even a thin layer of romance. And a plot twist straight out of…..a certain Star Wars film….not saying which one because I fear that would give too much away.
I live about ten minutes away from the theatre I saw the movie at….and I must have said…out loud, “Damn. That movie was sweet!” at least six times before I got home.
If you’re out there wondering what my wife thought of the film….I think she must have said, “Damn. That movie was sweet!!” at least three times during the same ten minute drive.
I think this could easily be the best movie I see all year.
Wanted. Rated R for…..Really freakin’ good. Now playing at a theatre near you.
